About Dr Sethi

Kapil Sethi is a Melbourne urologist and high-volume HoLEP surgeon based at Epworth Healthcare, Austin Health and St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He performs over 120 HoLEP procedures annually, making him one of the highest-volume providers of Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate in Australia. His advanced surgical training was completed at the Asklepios Klinik Barmbek in Hamburg under Professor Andreas Gross, a global pioneer of the HoLEP technique.

His technical expertise lies in the en-bloc HoLEP technique with early apical release using the Lumenis MOSES pulse-modulated laser platform, an advanced approach that enucleates the enlarged prostate tissue in one continuous piece. This method delivers precise tissue dissection, excellent haemostasis, reduced anaesthesia time, and accelerated post-operative recovery, and is particularly suited to patients with very large prostates, those on anticoagulation, and those requiring salvage HoLEP after previous BPH procedures.

Recognised as a key opinion leader in prostate enucleation, Kapil serves as a clinical proctor and actively trains and mentors other urological surgeons in advanced HoLEP techniques. He has established dedicated HoLEP teaching programmes at leading tertiary Melbourne hospitals. He convened the 2026 Epworth Urology Masterclass on BPH in Melbourne and is convening the BPH workshop at the upcoming USANZ Annual Scientific Meeting. He is also a frequently invited guest speaker at national and international urological meetings.

As a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Melbourne and an active clinical researcher, Kapil has published extensively on HoLEP outcomes. His 2025 systematic review in BJUI Compass demonstrated HoLEP’s superior long-term functional outcomes and lower reoperation rates compared with GreenLight laser surgery at beyond five years of follow-up. In 2026, his group published a further mixed-methods systematic review with meta-analysis in the Société Internationale d’Urologie Journal characterising the technical challenges of salvage HoLEP following contemporary minimally invasive BPH therapies, one of the first reviews of its kind. He supervises postgraduate research students at the University of Melbourne, reviews manuscripts for leading international urology journals, and is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand, the Endourological Society, the American Urological Association, and the European Association of Urology.
